Celebrating 50 Years: The Unforgettable Success of the LGSS Anniversary Regatta

The LGSS 50th anniversary regatta was more than just an event; it was a spectacular celebration of half a century of Scouting on Lake Ginninderra and a passion for sailing. The three Sea Scout groups from Canberra gathered to honor LGSS's history, showcasing their love for the sport on what turned out to be a fantastic day.

A Celebratory Gathering of Sailors

Over 45 boats graced our lake today, from LGSS, Lake Burley Griffin Sea Scouts (LBGSS) and Lake Tuggeranong Sea Scouts (LTSS). The feeling was amazing with so many boats being rigged on the beach, and each Sea Scout bringing their unique spirit to this wonderful celebration.

The wind started very low early on, with some scouts checking their reflections in the glassy water, but by the afternoon the wind was up to a respectable 8 knots and boats were powering!

There was a sausage sizzle for lunch. [anything else?]

A Look Back at 50 Years

Looking back, it's evident that LGSS has played a key role in nurturing the love of sailing in our youth. Since its formation in 1975, the Group has supported hundreds of sailors, providing the training and resources in a friendly supportive environment.

The anniversary regatta served as a poignant reminder of just how many Scout journeys had taken place on our lake and the number of lives that have been enhanced by the experience. From our educational programs to social events, LGSS has fostered many friendships and created lasting memories for countless Scouts in the ACT.

Thrilling Races and Competitions

The heart of the regatta was undoubtedly the races, which catered to everyone from novice sailors to seasoned competitors. Five competitive races took place, each with its own challenges as sailors navigated the course.
